John Brown

John Brown grew up in the West Woodlawn community located on the South Side of the City of Chicago and has been a lifetime leader in the BSA. Brown grew up during the time when Chicago Council was segregated and as an African American he became part of Chicago’s segregated Douglas Division when he joined the Boy Scouts in 1945. Brown earned Eagle Scout in 1949 and became a member of Owasippe Lodge in 1950. He received his Brotherhood Honor in 1964 and kept his Vigil Honor in 1972. In 1994 Brown received the OA Distinguished Service Award (DSA). He received the Silver Antelope Award in 1999 and the Founders Award from Michigamea Lodge 110 in 2007.

75th Anniversary Award

The Order of the Arrow (OA) celebrated its 75th Anniversary in 1990, and in keeping with earlier traditions established during the Order’s 50th and 60th Anniversaries, the celebration was a national event. The 75th Anniversary Award Program was first unveiled at the 1988 National OA Conference (NOAC) by the National OA Committee. The award program, which for the first time allowed adult participation, consisted of three main elements: the Individual Challenge, the Lodge Challenge, and the Rededication Ceremony.

OA Personal Involvement Award 1981

National Chief Jeff Herrmann announced the original OA Personal Involvement Award at the 1979 NOAC. The program was specifically created to give incentives to Arrowmen to provide cheerful service at the unit level, the primary responsibility of each member.


Those that received the award in the first year received an award patch dated 1980. As an incentive for Arrowmen to earn the award, or to earn the award again and continue to build on a successful program, a second patch was made dated 1981.

Founder's Award Established

Founder's Award Ribbon and MedallionIntroduced at the 1981 National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC), the Founder's Award was created to honor and recognize those Arrowmen who have given outstanding service to their lodge. The award is reserved for Arrowmen who demonstrate that they memorialize in their everyday lives the spirit of achievement as exemplified by the Founder E.
