Josh Sain

The Boy Scouts of America and the Order of the Arrow (OA) have certainly been blessed throughout their histories with very competent and capable youth leaders. In their own way, these exemplary leaders have perpetuated the fundamental values that both of these groups represent. Their personal involvement and commitment have not only enhanced these programs, but also allowed them to continue to grow and flourish over the years. Josh Sain was one such youth leader.

The Section Chiefs gathered together in Texas for the annual National Planning Meeting in December 1995. The most significant purpose for this meeting was to plan the OA’s involvement at the 1997 National Scout Jamboree.

NOAC 1996

The Order of the Arrow returned for an eighth time to Indiana University, Bloomington, for the 81st Anniversary Conference. The 6,265 delegates was the fourth consecutive NOAC with greater than 6,000 delegates. Conferences had grown, but this also had the result of limiting the number of campuses available that could stage a NOAC. The Conference theme selected at the National Planning Meeting by the Section Chiefs was "See the Dream, Live the Adventure."

Ryan Pitts of El-Ku-Ta Lodge, Salt Lake City, Utah was elected National Chief. Ryan Miske of Tonkawampus Lodge, Rockford, Minnesota was elected National Vice Chief.

Philmont Retreat

Beyond the success of the OA Trail Crew (OATC) program, the 1995 OA Retreat held August 20 – 24, 1995 also was a sensation for the 400 attendees. Reminiscent of conclave training, there were four seminar choices: American Indian events, ceremonies, quality program development and showmanship.

Philmont - Conservation Service

Conservation work by the Order of the Arrow (OA) had its roots at Philmont Scout Ranch. Special OA Treks were held at the ranch in 1985 and 1989, but these were short-term treks based more on camping and fellowship and without any long-term plans. However, the treks helped prove that an outdoor program for the OA could be successful.

By 1995 the national theme for the Order was “The Year of Service” and the OA Trail Crew (OATC) program became the major service initiative for the year.
